When I was twenty, I discovered I wasn't a very good cook. I had always loved to bake, even as a kid, but my skills came up short if I made anything without chocolate chips. My husband would disagree, but he's a nice guy. For the first year of our marriage, I burned chicken, boiled pasta to its starchy death, and thought that frozen French fries counted as a vegetable.
In 2003, I started my journey towards being a better cook. I read cookbooks and watched cooking shows and burned a lot more chicken. A few weeks into it though, the chicken started to get a little better. At one point, I actually enjoyed grocery shopping! Then one day, I realized how much I loved cooking. I mean, I LOVE cooking. I love opening the fridge, grabbing a couple of things, and creating something I've never made before that actually tastes really good! I love cooking for people and exposing them to foods they might not have eaten before. And it is a joy for me to show others how to do the same.
I've been cooking for and with my friends for the last couple of years, never thinking I could make a career out of it. However, in 2007, I had a conversation with my mom who encouraged me to pursue teaching others all that I have learned. And as we all know, mothers know best! I start researching the idea, and My First Kitchen was born!
My First Kitchen is for anyone who wants to experience the true joy of cooking. Maybe you've moved into your first house with a real kitchen. Maybe you just got married and are suddenly responsible for another person's sustenance. Maybe you've been cooking for your family for years but just want a fresh look at food. Regardless of your experience, your knowledge, or your lifestyle, it would be my joy to share my kitchen with you!
