Time for a Giveaway!

Last week, I asked you if you were interested in learning more about local and organic foods. (And when I say local, I mean "your" local.) Well, the people have spoken! I'm going to share my journey with you, and we're going to figure out how to make this work for every day.

The first step? Getting educated.

You might have heard about the documentary, Food Inc. It's a film that profiles the food industry and how it affects us as consumers. It's awesome. And not boring at all since documentaries automatically make people yawn. Even if you decide to continue eating processed foods and things from the big grocery stores, at least you're educated on what you're eating. That's really the first step for you to make an informed decision about food.

So to help you get started, I'm giving away THREE COPIES OF FOOD INC. I know; it's exciting.

Here's how to enter.

  1. Leave a comment on this post, and tell me how you feel about local and/or organic food. Knowing where you guys are coming from will help me direct the topic later on. That gets you one entry.
  2. Tweet about this giveaway. Just put this link and @myfirstkitchen in the content. That gets you another entry.
  3. Put a link on your Facebook profile and tell me on the wall of the MFK fan page. Yes, yet another entry.
  4. Want five extra entries? Actually write a post about this giveaway on your own blog. Shoot me an email with the permalink to qualify.

So you can potentially get your name in the pool eight times. I think that's pretty sweet.

I'm really passionate about our families eating well and eating together. I also think it's important to know how to support local farmers and change the way we see and eat food. The more people that see this film, the closer we come to that end. So please tell your friends, your family, and your readers to watch, and if they can win a free copy, even better!

Winners will be announced on Sunday, so be sure to enter by Saturday at midnight! Can't wait!!

I've been wanting to see that. Food is scary these days and is one of the things that has pushed me to start gardening. I've become a total addict to it now and have really enjoyed the fruits of my labor. I also buy organic when I can, but then there's the issue of freshness and now I'm hearing that even some "organic" processes are less than desirable. Taking the best care I can of my family is of the utmost importance to me and I know there are a lot of hidden dirty secrets in a LOT of the foods at the grocery store. I'm looking forward to what you have to share about this with us.

Because I was raised in a farming community it's hard for me to understand how eating organic has become so complicated. I'm thinking Michelle Obama wouldn't be working so hard to get kids to eat their veggies if they tasted like the ones I had growing up. Eating was always a celebration when the food on your table came from a community effort in a labor of love. I wish we could get that back.

I'm not sure my neighbors would appreciate a vegetable garden in my front yard!

We have a local store that advertises the non-local food with pride, "Straight from Seattle"! "To you from Cuba"! are examples of their ads. Which are ridiculous in light of the increasing interest in local foods. I love the idea of knowing where my food comes, but want to support my community farmers as much as possible. Looking forward to reading your posts on it.

I really believe in using local and/or organic food. Unfortunately for my family, our finances are really tight right now. I recently quit my job to stay home with my 2 and 3 year old. So we're still in the process of adjusting our budget. I looked into our local CSAs and they're just too expensive for us right now. I do shop at our local farmer's market whenever I can. The fruits and veggies just taste SO much better!!!

I am buying as much organic as I can find and in the summer I go to the local farmers market for as long as it is there.

February 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSharon

I want to see that. I want to be more educated about local and organic foods and to know about my options and what it all means.

As a new mom as well (Lilly is 6 months old), The last year or so, being pregnant and breast feeding, I have made a point of buying locally and organic food for us and now as I make baby food for Lilly. It is a little more difficult here in Ottawa, Canada as it is in the middle of winter now, but the grocery stores are good about having organic foods available. I love knowing the food I have bought has no chemicals or preservatives in it!

I read Fast Food Nation. I nearly barfed afew times. But I am glad to know more. I would love to get this movie, especially to share with my family and encourage them to get on board with me. Thanks for the chance.

I totally support buying local as much as possible. I also have my own garden and freeze and/or can as much as possible. i always tell my husband that at least I know what is in the food when it comes from my own garden or canning cellar. My children are spoiled because we eat so much from our own backyard and in my opinion I think it tastes so much better.....at least I know it is healthier!

This past year, I began removing a lot of processed food from our diet. Not all, but some. I was tired of looking at labels of things as simple as breadcrumbs and seeing a list of chemicals instead of flour, yeast, etc. I buy organic for the dirty dozen items from our local grocery chain, and have switched to organic dairy products. I am purchasing all of our hormone & antibiotic free meat from our local grocer who gets it exclusively from a ranch in our state. I'm just gradually making small, manageable changes. I would be really interested to see this video. I've heard a lot about it.

Hey, Kendra! I would love to see this movie. I have two small kids (3 and 6 months) and I would love to learn how to feed my family (and myself) better.

OK I am so excited about this giveaway because I realllly want to win Food, Inc., which I have been saying I will watch FOR A LONG TIME. This is the first step.

So how do I feel about local/organic food? I love the idea of supporting local farmers, like I did with my CSA last summer, but it was hard because it was (a) a lot of food and (b) a little more money than I should have spent. The money thing is also my concern with most organic products, but lately that hasn't stopped me because I'm thinking better quality and less of it is better than poor quality in excess.

I do try to buy local, which is tough around here (CO). I wait with baited breath for the farmers market season and stock up for the winter. I grow many veggies in the summer and belong to a CSA but do with "real" food was more affordable.
I buy organic always for the products on the "worst offenders" list and when it is a decent price for everything else. I have little ones in the house so I'm careful about what they eat. I ahte that you can't always trust the "organic" label but I figure it's probably better than the conventionally grown.
Now that's a ramble! I've not seen Food Inc but am excited to. I found your blog some months back in search of some whole food recipes so I'm thrilled to see you supporting real food.

I would love to see and own the movie. I try to buy anything local that I can food or otherwise because I like to keep the money in the community and because I can know where my purchases came from. Our house is the haven for college students from a local Christian college and I know that many of them would love to watch this movie also as they are about to embark on life outside of college soon. In many ways my greatest encouragement to buy local comes from them.

BTW: Local for us is Minnesota!

Kendra -

Katie (Eller/Hambo) gave me your blog a while ago and I have been loving it ever since - I've made multiple of your recipes in the last year (and that's saying something since I am still in college with hardly any budget to work with!)

I have seen Food, Inc and let me tell you, it nearly changed my life. I live with 6 other girls and we talk about this subject nearly. every. day. Seriously, we love the idea of eating organic. While Trader Joe's is our favorite "fad" grocery store to go to, we love the farmers market in Carrboro and the idea of feeding our bodies wonderful things.

I would love to see more ideas for eating organic and creating "green" meals with family/friends. I could guarentee you some very excited fans if you cover this topic!

OK, I will try not to write an entire book here in the comment section. This topic is my number one passion (besides my Saviour!) I have almost completely eliminated processed foods my diet and my children's diets. It has been a 5 year journey for me and this movie pushed me to the final phase. I eat only local grass fed beef that I get from a local farmer. I only eat organic chicken as well.

I will do everything on this list to raise awareness of this movie and this topic!!! I'd love to team up with you somehow through my personal blog too! Shopping, recipes, etc. I do it all based on local and organic as much as I can. I don't care how much money I have to spend, it is worth it for me to have my kids eat the best they an to prevent cancers, etc.

OK, I'll stop. But, wanted to thank you so much for talking about this! I think it is AWESOME! Loved to encourage you any way I can! I've got lots of info if you want it!

I love of local food and try to buy local when I can. I just read an article about how sometimes eating small and local actually produces MORE greenhouse gases than if you buy from a larger farm. http://weeklystandard.com/articles/farmer-knows-best
But, the article doesn't talk about many things that Food Inc. does: cows weren't created to eat corn, the need for more petroleum based fertilizers, and the ethical treatment of animals. Anyway, I'm all for local if it's in season. And I loved Food Inc. Just watched it last night via Netflix. :)

Oh yeah. I have been blogging about Food, Inc and pleading with folks to get educated. But...I had to borrow mine for the local library. Would love me a copy of my own!

I believe in supporting my local community and definitely want my family to eat healthier...but where do I begin? Help!

February 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAndrea Martin

I love the idea of buying local. I'm starting to do a bit more of it. As I've checked out my area and looked into CSA's here, I've found I'm not in such a great place. The effort and expense makes it harder. I buy raw milk from a local produce place and am hoping to buy more local produce this summer. I've heard great things about the documentary...would love to see it. Oh, and I bought the stuff to make your grown-up pork and beans slow-cooker dish. Can't wait to try!

February 23, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterThe Scooper

I love the idea of buying local and organic but it just seems so much more expensive. And it seems that buying locally is easier to do in the summer when produce stands and farmers' markets are on every corner. Can't wait to hear what you have to say about it all...thanks for the giveaway!

February 23, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

love organic...have my own garden that i keep organic by using only natural bug deterrents. i sooo need to sign up for one of your classes again soon! will post about you right now!

February 23, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSassy

We've belonged to a CSA for many years. We have a community garden, and eat about 80% organic, and local as much as possible.
